Summary of SEED
The Singapore Epidemiology of Eye Disease (SEED) Centre serves to initiate, promote and coordinate ophthalmic epidemiologic research in Singapore and throughout Asia. SEED aims to determine the epidemiology, impact and risk factors for visual impairment, cataract, myopia, glaucoma, age-related macular degeneration, and diabetic retinopathy.

The Centre has expertise in all aspects of clinical research, including clinical trials, epidemiology and biostatics, as well as research related to genetic and molecular epidemiology, evidence-based medicine and outcomes research. The SEED programme will provide invaluable data towards health planning and resource allocation in the region, ultimately establishing Singapore as a leading hub of ophthalmic epidemiology and genetic research in the Asia Pacific region.

Specific Aims of SEED

The Singapore Epidemiology of Eye Disease (SEED) Centre aims:

  1. To determine the prevalence, incidence, risk factors and public health significance of blinding eye diseases in Singapore and Asia through the conduct of epidemiological studies
  2. To foster international collaborations with other ophthalmic institutes in Asia and worldwide
  3. To provide research, expertise and consultation to other research centers, hospitals and ophthalmic institutions in Singapore and Asia
  4. To conduct training programmes for clinicians and research students interested in ophthalmic epidemiology
  5. To organise workshops and symposia and international meetings on ophthalmic clinical research and epidemiologic methods
